The Mamluk rugs are made by the renowned Turkoman weavers across the Northern Afghanistan Regions. The weavers use what is known as a Turkoman Baft, which is a double knot. The pile of these rugs is a high quality sheep’s wool, hand spun and then dyed using local dying techniques. The wool pile is knotted onto a cotton warp.

The Mamluk pattern was created originally in Egypt during the 13th-16th centuries. The Mamluks were respected slaves whose main purpose was to protect Egypt as soldiers.

There are intricate borders to the Mamluk rug surrounding the central panel which predominantly features the large circular shaped central medallion. This rug is filled with tiny detailed patterns.

Whilst a Traditional pattern, the colour palette is current, subtle and tasteful in its combinations of darks and pale vegetable dyed colours.
